Eventful and Exciting Weekend!

Hope everyone had a fantastic Memorial Day Weekend. Kyle and I took a long weekend and drove down to St. Louis to try and finalize some wedding plans. While we were there, we visited Overlook Farms again and tried to get an idea of how the wedding "flow" and reception "floor plan" would look. It was exciting to talk through the details and realize the next time I will be there, I will almost be a married woman!
Here are some of the key spots:

Ceremony Location; Overlooking the beautiful Mississippi River

Reception Location; the evergreens are supposed to be coming down to open up space to the house (which is where the ever so important restrooms will be). We plan to position the band to the right of the large tree.

Food Table Location (don't worry, the satelite dish will be moving)

Entrance for the guests; we plan to dress this up a bit!

10 Steps to a GREENER Wedding!

It has been Kyle and My goal from the beginning to have a "green" wedding. Now that we have become more health conscience it has become MORe important! Not only that the wedding is green, but that things are sustainable, we know where our food is coming from and we are supporting small local businesses!
Here are the steps we are taking to a greener wedding!

1. Vintage Plates: Kyle and I are searching high and low for unique and vintage plates. Our favorite place to go is Bible's For Missions Thrift store. Not only is our money going to a good cause, but we are giving items a second life AND they are only $.39 per plate! That's cheaper than some rentals, and if I re-donate when the wedding is over, we get a tax right off! Brilliant!

2. Re-claimed Wood Signs: When Kyle and I moved into our house in Minneapolis, there were some old, water logged planters in our back yard. Most of the wood has gone to bond fires, however with the amount that is left over we are making unique directional signs for our guests! "Ceremony", "Sarah's Flowers", "Dancing", "Camping" and "Farmer's Market" are some of the ideas I have had! These signs are something I have been seeing all over the blogs, but I really like the idea of reclaiming wood instead of buying new at the lumber yard.

3. Local Foods: Overlook Farms and Clarksville Station is known for "honoring the natural flavors of fresh, locally grown food". Which is an important reason we have decided on them for our venue. They have fields upon fields of fruit orchards and vegatable gardens and they partner with other local farmers who practice sustainable farming techniques. The food is always fresh! This will definetly give guests something to appreciate, so don't be afraid to flaunt it in your menus and signs! I am super excited about my "Farmer's Market" Salad Bar that will be at my wedding!

4. Vintage Decor: Much of our decor is from vintage treasures we have been collecting for years. From the vintage cans and mason jars that make up the centerpieces, to the vintage books to show our personalities, to old fruit crates scattered throughout the setting to hold programs, silverware of anything else we can think of!

5. Unexpected Cloth Napkins: Again it is amazing what you can find at the thrift store! Without spending a fortune of "custom" napkins that you will throw away, Kyle and I tossed back and forth a couple of ideas for our napkins at our place settings. Then we landed on using vintage sheets. Just by cutting them with pinking shears, it finishes the edges. We are using a variety of patterns, but it would also be nice to keep it simple and use white sheets or cream. Think of how many napkins you could get in one sheet!

6. Local Bakeries For Dessert: We are purchasing our pies from a small local grocery store. It has been locally owned for several years and we know by investing in there bakery our money is going right back into the community we grew up in. We are excited about this, not only becuase of it quaint nostalgia, but it keeps our prices down too!

7. Grow Your Own Flowers: Although, everyone knows that it is important for your pocketbook to choose flowers that are in season in your region, sometimes this thought can go as far as your back yard! The venue I am working with has large open fields, and they are planning to plant Zinnias (which just so happened to be one of my flowers of choice!) then I will get to "pick" as many flowers as I want! Now, I realize that I am very lucky for having this option, but find your local farmer's market or craigslist a farmer, requesting to grow large amounts of "easy to grow" flowers for a price! It will save so much money, support local farmers and add so much charm to your special day!

8. CAMPING: So when we talked to Overlook Farms, one of my big questions was could my guests camp out. After some chatting with the owner, they were all for it. They even decided to call our camp out guests the "Under The Stars" guests! How Cute! It saves the farm energy, guests money and is just a fun idea!

9. Prize Ribbon Lanterns: So our entire wedding revolves around the "prize ribbon" theme, so when paper source put out a tutorial on how to make these pinwheel paper lantern things I was so excited! just add a circular center and some cute tails and its a prize ribbon. So I started collecting large pieces of discarded paper from work to build my prize ribbon alter! Then I decided I could hang smaller ones from the last chair that hits the aisle. So talk about giving paper a 2nd life, before it can get recycled! Plus it saves me Moola!!!!

10. Re-Using Glassware: So as part of the nostalgia and fun of our wedding, we decided to make our favors/escort cards/drink glasses from mason jars. We are asking guests to have their glasses rinsed between drinks instead of getting a whole new glass. When the wedding is over, they can take their jars home (lids and all). We will suggest ways to use their jar at home; store buttons, can jelly, bring your lunch to work, etc. This way everyone wins! The earth, the guests and our venue!

I hope this can eventually give other brides some good ideas on a green wedding. A green wedding doesn't always have to be set in the coutry. There can be fabulously, glamourous ones too!!

Just enough Country....With Just enough Class!

Well, I just can help but be giddy every time I talked to someone down at Overlook Farms. They have bent over backwards for me since day one of our "uniting", you could say!

I had a lovely phone conversation with Moira this evening on the farm. "Your wedding is the talk of the summer!" she said. "We are planting a field of flowers, Zinnias. We would like you to choose which specie and color.....Then you can pick them the day of your wedding. We will have a sign in the field that says "Sarah's Flowers"......."

WHAT?!?!?! Seriously. How perfect. What an amazing gesture, photo opt and thoughtflulness that could only make this day better. They really put forth the right amount of elegance and class, while still allowing me to have guests camp out on their lawns and serve Pabst as our beer.

Thanks Overlook! There are so many more amazing things ahead!!!!

Bad, Bad Blogger!!!!

WOW! ALmost 2 months later and I am finally getting to a new post. Not sure how many loyal readers I have, but for those of you that are, I am truely sorry! Many things have been bustling around here. I created a sketch of what I want my Alter to look like at the wedding. These are paper pin wheels made from old printer paper. If we can use prints it will be even better, but I am doing my best to save a tree and only using "oops" paper from work. My intention is that they look like prize ribbons. Kyle is really my prize, but this is a nice added touch! Ok, I will add more later!!!!

Seriously contemplating Farmer's Market Flowers

So just tlike everything else involved in the wedding, I can't make a decision. When we first started out with wedding planning we thought we would do our own flowers and get them through a wholesaler. Then, I thought, "this is my wedding, I want my bouquet to be professionally done". Then, I got the bid back and we are back to square one. I feel very comfortable doing my table centerpieces myself. I don't think what I want warrants the chunk of change it will take to make these centerpieces. I got this book from my girlfriend called "The Knot Flowers". It has been a great resource. I wish I would have dug it out of the attic sooner! It has all the species listed and their colors and seasons. Then it tells you how to make your own bouquets, ceterpieces, etc.....
Anyways, I am waiting to get cost back from the wholesaler on the species on want and we will take it from there!

Sweet Relief!

Today, along "River Road", in the small, quaint town of Clarksville, MO we found our wedding location. As we pulled into the Clarksville Station parking lot, a sense of excitement came over me. The antique wagon was just a little too perfect. We entered the restaurant, we were greeted by a very friendly waitress. She smiled a great big smile when we told her we were there to talk about our wedding. We were escorted into the shop area, where the head chef came to greet us. We sat and had a couple of ice teas and then were swept off my Moira for our tour of the property!

We started at the 1st of the 3 Inns. Every suite in the place was beautifully decorated. Not a corner vacant without some antique. In the backyard was a wonderfull little courtyard where rose bloom throughout the spring and summer. There was also a heated pool. It was really hard to stay out of it! We toured 2 more Inns with all the same charm!

Then we walked up a small hill, and ended up on a overlook the looked out over the entire city and the river. Tears started to well in my eyes and I just knew this had to be it. It was perfect, even in its dormant state of winter. Moira congratulated us and pulled 3 glasses and a bottle of champagne from a small bucket. Perfection.

The day was finished with a fantastic sampling of the chef's food. The sweet potatoe fries were just delicious! As we left the restaurant and were out of site, I began sqealing with delight! It couldn't have been better I were to pull the most elaborate vision of my wedding from my head.

It is going to be a beautiful day!

Today's Before the Sunrise Post

So I couldn't fall back to sleep this morning. My neighbor woke me up with his loud music at 5 am; he was blaring the cover to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".......random. Then I started thinking about the fashion show garment and accessories that I have to have ready by Tuesday, and wedding planning, and how I really want to curl my hair for work today......

So I decided to come and write a post. Which I have carelessly fallen behind on, but now I have more exiting things to write! My Save-The-Dates are IN!!! My Stationer received them friday, she is just waiting to get my rubber stamp back and they will be in my hands! I can't wait! She did send me some photographs, I will post them again when they are all assembled and beautiful!

I have to say, working with Meg has been really fantastic! I must also say, don't avoid a stationer if they are out of state because you are afraid it is too far. I am sure there are more than enough willing and capable people right here in Minneapolis, but I am so pleased I decided to go with Meg. She went to the same college as I did, and now she is running her business out of Savannah, GA. We have been able to communicate back and forth so easily via email. She sends me little snippets of what she is working on, all along the way! Go check her out here!!!!

So the girls who are making my wedding dress sent me this link today to a beautiful yellow and red wedding. I love the accents they use! Especially her adorable "mouse" Marc Jacob Flats!

I love their style and how truly in love they appear. Great inspiration for the coming V-day Holiday!

Luci Kandler and Ashley Wokash are the masterminds behind Calpurnia Peach; Adorable silhouettes and accessories designed and screen printed out of their NE Minneapolis Studio. They have been absolutely fantastic to work with on my dress.......so much that I have also recruited them to make my bridesmaids and flower girls dresses too. It just seemed right and they seem to be just as excited as I am. They are know for their amazing screen prints. They screen printed these adorable flags for the wedding above and I couldn't resist to snatch up the idea for myself!

Calpurnia Peach will be launching their new spring line in shops around Minneapolis soon! I will keep everyone posted on when and where they can grab one of their latest works of art!

So, Today.......I will just write......

So today was a great day at work, however the fact that Kyle and I style don't have a wedding location is hanging over my head. Planning from so far away makes this even more difficult. I'm concerned that I made the wrong decision to make everything so "do-it-yourself", when I could just as easily picked a location that included everything.

Last month, we decided to no longer have our wedding the the DD Ranch. They really didn't have the experience, and their facility just wasn't ready for what we needed. I had such high hopes, but there just was no way I could spend the next 9 months comfortable. I would always be worrying. So of course we made that drastic decision after we made our holiday visit to St. Louis, so for the past several weeks we have done extensive internet searching and making phone calls. We landed on 2 possible locations.

Hawk Point B & B: I had looked up this facility when I first started searching and spoke with the owner. they don't have any sort of shelter on the property and we would have to rent restroom trailers. But we were getting a really good price and it included over night stay for us and any of our guests that wanted to could camp out on the grounds. We could bring in our own bar and bartender which would save us a ton, however, we would have to find out own wait staff. No official closing time, and really as much use of the 32 acres that we wanted. Natalie (who owns the B&B) has really been great!
Edg-Clif Farm and Winery Is located about an hour and a half south of St. Louis (a little further than we'd prefer to have our guests travel) but was a beautiful location! They have a 1930's Granery Barn, antique wagons and tractors for ambiance, restrooms and dressing rooms on the property. They provide staffing (at a cost) that seems very well put together. They also work with a florist, who has done some beautiful work. They would provide the bartender and the kegs for beer. We could provide the liquor, but there would be a corking fee. Really a VERY beautiful venue!

I am just having the hardest time making a decision. I know I can not finalize anything till I see it in person, but the anxiety it is causing me could knock me out of this chair! I think I have two very GOOD options.......It's just a waiting game till I can get down there to see them!
We are looking at going down next weekend of the first weekend in March. March just seems to be getting VERY close to.......well too close.

Day of WEDDING!!!!

This past weekend, Kyle, Lucy, Rachel and I drove 7 hours up to Chicago to visit my parents and so Kyle and I could attend the Indie Wed Expo! We had fun and got some great ideas!

Some of my favorite booths were included:

1. The Small Object: they make these adorable little cake toppers. They are customizable to the bride and groom and that they are being purchased for. I just fell in love with them!

2. Inspired Goodness: They are an event designer team from Brooklyn. They put together some amazing events, including weddings. One of the owners also does beautiful graphic design and can out together some great stationary!

3. Edyta Szyszlo Photography and Smitten Sticks: She was a photographer from San Fran, previously from Chi-Town. We actually got our free ticket from her! Rebecca at Clover & Bee did a giveaway through Edyta Photography for the ticket! Anyways, she had the best booth in the place! I want my wedding tables to look like that!

4. The Wedding Co. had the crane chandelier project there. The goal was to have little paper cranes signed by all the engaged couples. For everycrane signed, they would donate $.50 to cancer. What a fantastic cause! Read more about it here!

Nothing bad can come from a day of Vintage shopping!

I am so excited! Today is going to be jam packed full of vintage fun! First, we are going to this woman's house who has over 54 metal tin cans that she found under her grandma's basement steps. Once she heard what I wanted to use them for, she was all over it! She is going to lay them out for us so we can shop her collection!
Then, we are off to Hunt & Gather! A handful of our friends have never been there, so we thought it only appropriate for us to take them! it is going to be so much fun!
After that we are going to make some general stops; Room andBoard to look for a new couch, then maybe Urban to spend some left over Christmas gift cards, then to Grandpa's house to take him to Culver's! Should be a fun day!

Today, I got an email from Rebecca over at Clover & Bee, asking me to write a guest blog! I am so excited, but also a little unsure of where to start. I figured I would begin with my journey and what I have learned (so far) and the things I won't sacrifice, and the the things I will.

My blog has really become more of a "bulletin board" of where I can store all the ideas I find on the web. Some of these ideas trickle into my personal life and I only wish I could have 2, 3 or even 4 weddings....... not to marry another man of course :)

I will be sure to post links, when I do get my columns posted. Any advice & encouragement would be great!

Another big decision was made this past week. Kyle and I chose our photographer! We have decided to go with Heather and Grayson Jagger, a husband and wife team at Jagger Photography.

We did a TON of research, but ultimately liked this couple the best! They included their flight costs in the package price, there is 2 of them for the price of one, she insisted on calling me to get to know me better, rather that talking through email. She has gorgeous red hair too, so she has to be cool!

Really looking forward to the results!

Well after a trip back to St. Louis, I think we finally came to a conclusion to where our wedding extravaganza will be held!
We met this fantastic couple this weekend, Dean and Dinell. They own the DD Ranch. I can promise you that these two do not sleep! Dinell teaches riding lessons during the day on one of the 13 horses she has. She spends her nights as a nurse and cares for an elderly man. Dean works construction and runs his own business. Together, they run DD Ranch. It is a bed and breakfast, campground, horseback riding and just fun loving Ranch. They had never hosted a wedding before, but had some great idea to add! By the end of our 5 hour visit, we decided to celebrate with them!
I took pictures of everything, but im driving in the car right now and im unable to post them, so stay tuned.....

Who says nothing is for free anymore! I love surfing through my saved wedding blogs (on a daily basis, sometimes twice, might I add) and finding fantastic planning ideas, DIY tips and tricks and FREE print and pattern templates. For example: i DiY is a fantastic ideas website! Every entry almost, has a free templates or prints to download...... Yes FREE no strings attached! Like these, aren't they adorable?!?!?!
Then there are other amazing blogs, that uncover amazing vendors, that I would have never found myself. Like Green Wedding Shoes! They featured this Canadian company, Paper Valise that has an abundance of vintage labels!

I am really drawn to this photographer. Her name is Kelty, and I would say she is a "Jane of all trades". She not only does photography, but also web design, print work, custom art and apparel. She has some amazing stuff. I feel like I know those people just by looking at her pictures. She runs Steep Street Photography as well. I just find her fascinating.

I just love the little "petal" layers of this bride's dress! I first saw the details of her wedding in MS Weddings, but then I noticed all my favorite wedding sites were also following it! I just think her dress is adorable! How do you get Martha to cover your wedding anyways?

Ok, so back in 2006 when I first bought this ready made mag, I fell in love with the way this couple celebrated their day. I have held onto it for this many years, and I still feel as strongly about it. Popcorn machine....yes. Large lighted initials....yes. Lots of homemade fun....Hell YES!

So anyways, indulge in this homemade fun. And plan to see a more "tailored to Sarah and Kyle" version in the future!

Ok, So I can't take all the credit for these ideas, although I do feel like this bride jumped in my mind and took it all, but I'm really excited to start seeing everything begin to come together.

I think seeing Halli & Adam make love so beautiful and fun, just proves that not everything has to be stuffy and uptight at a wedding. The Owner of this adorable shop, Liz Demos, helped plan the carnival inspired event, so naturally I have recruited her talents to help with mine also.

I started collecting little things to create the mood of my "Country County Fair" Theme, and this is what I have so far.......

Since last Sunday, June 21st; Father's Day, Summer Solstice, the day Kyle got on one knee at Minnehaha Falls, with Lucy strapped to his chest, to ask me to marry him after more than 8 and a half years, I have not been able to stop thinking about planning!

From Color palette to location; My dress to bridesmaid dresses; Food, Formality and so much more! The first thing that really caught my eye was these gorgeous and fun summertime colors and patterns.
